Dr. Justin Stanley enjoys a career as a sought-after freelance hornist, accomplished chamber musician, and teacher. Justin is a founding member of American Prize-finalist Some Assembly Required, a chamber ensemble praised for its “innovative” and “new approach to programming and performing at the highest level” (Richard Guerin, Salem Classical, MA). SAR has toured across the country and commissioned several new works, four of which are featured on its debut eponymous album. With SAR and in solo projects, Justin presents music seldom heard by today’s audiences. Justin is Assistant Professor of Horn at Tennessee Tech's School of Music.

Justin is principal horn with the Bryan Symphony Orchestra, and hornist in the Brass Arts Quintet and Cumberland Quintet. Additional 23-24 engagements include the Asheville Symphony, Knoxville Symphony, Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, Tennessee Philharmonic, and Eugene Symphony. He was 2nd horn with the Newport Symphony from 2020-2023. He led the horn section at the 2023 Colorado Mahlerfest, performing Mahler's 2nd Symphony, Kindertotenlieder, and the first act of Wagner's Die Walküre. Justin was principal horn with Orchestra NEXT for their 2021 production and studio recording of the Nutcracker.

 

Additional performance highlights include the Microphilharmonic, Oregon Mozart Players, Boston Philharmonic, Lexington Symphony, Plymouth Philharmonic, the Lyric Stage Theatre, the Boston Opera Collaborative, and the Wenham Street Brass. 

Justin has a wide variety of educational experience, including private lessons, teaching in higher education, designing curriculum for courses and summer camps, research with the Center for Music-in-Education, and conducting for collegiate brass ensembles. He was co-owner and education director at A Street Music in Quincy, MA and a faculty member at the All Newton Music School. Justin was Instructor of Horn for the 2022-2023 school year at the University of Oregon.

Justin served on the board of the Northwest Horn Society for three years. In that role, Justin spearheaded multiple scholarship programs, started a podcast, and provided marketing and communications support. He has coordinated exhibits and advertising for multiple International Horn Society symposia. Justin received a Bachelor’s in Music Performance from New York University, a Master’s in Horn Performance with a Music-in-Education concentration from New England Conservatory, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Horn Performance from the University of Oregon.

Justin plays a Lewis and Dürk LDx5 Boston Model with a Patrick mouthpiece. He also regularly uses a Cantesanu mouthpieces, and owns  a much-adored 900,000 series Conn 8D.
